See that puckery goodness? That's a recently finished and washed quilt. I just finished it last week on my new sewing machine. But those hexis.....
I took a stroll through my Instagram feed and very old blog photos to see if I could find a date when I first started working on those little hexis. And I found one. 2013.
That's 12 years ago, if you're counting. I will say those little hexis went through quite a few stages on their way to that finished quilt. I started with just a few in order to make a little pouch I found in a sewing magazine. I found that photo too:
The hexis were so fun and such a great on-the-go project, I just kept making them. When I had a pretty good pile, I decided I would make a quilt with a big field of hexis in the center. Here's proof:
They stayed in that format for quite a few years, tucked away in a WIP drawer. I stalled out on what kind of borders I wanted around it and it just never went anywhere.
Then at some point I saw a quilt by Sherri McConnell called Flower Garden in an old American Patchwork & Quilting magazine. I decided to rip my field of hexis apart into flowers. Which I promptly did and then put them away again.
After a period of hibernating, I decided to just start appliqueing them to squares of fabric. I always forget how much I enjoy hand applique until I do some again. I think I finished appliqueing them sometime in 2024. They got a nice rest...again...until I grabbed them about a month ago and decided to finish. that. project!
This is actually the first quilt that I finished completely on a sewing machine. I pieced the blocks together, quilted it, attached the binding -and for the first time - finished the binding with my sewing machine and not by hand.
(And I'm just gonna say, my photography has come a little way since 2013 :)
