Summer quilting

Summer quilting

I always seem to be in a mood for patchwork during the summer. I tend to make quilt tops or other small patchwork projects (like bags) during the warmer months, and then usually I do the quilting and finishing during colder months.

That didn't hold true this year, since I just finished quilting and binding this Rail Fence Ripple quilt this month. It was machine quilted, but I finish my binding by hand. Which means a few evenings of a quilt laying on my lap.

I've learned not to start another big project until the current big project is completely finished and off the table. This is a perfect time to work on something simple or small-ish. These flying geese fit the bill perfectly:

I'm using some of my prized Amy Sinibaldi (Art Gallery Fabrics) scraps to make these blocks whenever I have a few moments, or I don't feel like working on something complicated.

Art Gallery Fabrics has a cheat sheet for making 4 flying geese at a time. I used that and then sew them into simple blocks. This will eventually be a lap size quilt.

The next big project will be this quilt from an old American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine. I'm using Bellissimo Gardens and Albion FQ bundles along with a few assorted extras. I think these will make a great fall quilt for our bed.

This is what I've cut so far:
I've got a nice cream and tan dot for the background fabric, and I've been saving a package of wool quilt batting for a nice, warm quilt. A perfect summer project. I just wonder how many summers it will take?
Do you have projects you veer toward during the summer months?
