friday favorites: my favorite sock needles

We're blessed with an over-abundance of most things these days, and the knitting world is no different. It's oh-so-easy to accumulate needles, needles and more needles without even really trying. Especially if you are a sock knitter.

Most of the sock knitters I know have more than one pair of socks on the needles at any given time, sometimes a lot more. I used to have 2 or 3 pairs going most of the time, but now it's usually just one pair at a time. Occasionally two.

I've found that not having too many supplies works best for me. That way, I can use and enjoy my favorite tools.

I'm a dpn (double point needles) girl all the way. I've done magic loop enough to know that I prefer dpns. They just seem so much simpler and straightforward to me. And these are my very favorite pair of dpns:

The sad thing is I can't even tell you who made them.

I got these at an antique mall about eight years ago. I think I paid $1 for them. I got them along with another pair of dpns and a few straights. If I had to guess, I'd say they were Boye, but it doesn't really matter to me.

The thing I love about these needles (other than the color) is how they feel in my hands. They feel strong. Yet they're very lightweight. The tips are perfect...not too blunt, not too pointy.

And oh yeah, that color! Beautiful, beautiful olive green. Why don't they make needles in yummy colors like this? It just makes me happy every time I knit with them.

I use these whenever I'm knitting socks on US 1's (2.25 mm), unless the yarn is green or too close in color to the needles. (Then I go with a back up pair I also like, which are silver.)

Do you have a favorite pair of needles?

Do you prefer dpn's or circulars for sock knitting?
