I'm not sure how this little collection became a collection...I think it started with a couple of the small rulers for me to use in my sketching and drawing.
After that, it seemed like we just kept finding great old rulers at flea markets and antique malls and before you know it, it's a collection! The thing about a good ruler, whether it's large or small, is that they are unfailingly practical. Of course, my eye tends to go towards older ones that have been used and loved.
You'll even see them creep into the photos for some of our models, like this one of The Shepherd's Year for September.
I found the one below at a flea market. Someone put their initials "EEY" in it. Now I call it my Eeyore ruler. It's actually pretty handy - it has measurements at each end: 3/8" and 1 1/2" on this end. 1/2" and 1/4" on the other end.
I'm usually partial to smaller ones, thank goodness, but I did find a wonderful 4-foot long ruler that hangs on the wall of my sewing room.
I'm also partial to a bit of brass on a ruler :)
Nowadays it's fun to look for unusual, quirky and interesting ones! (Like the little one with the pencil sharpener on the end...love that!)
Do you have any accidental collections that have become favorites?
I'm Robin, the designer behind October House. You've found my journal, where I talk about stitching, sewing and anything else that might catch my fancy!
